6 Dental Health New Year’s Resolutions for Keeping Your Smile Bright And Healthy All Year

You may not have kept all your New Year’s resolutions come March, but maintaining a bright, healthy smile is more sustainable than it seems. Here are six tips to showing off a glowing smile throughout 2022:

Find the Tooth-Friendly Foods

Next time you’re strolling through the grocery store, seek out the stuff that’ll keep the shine on your pearly whites. Cheese, milk, and plain yogurt are some of the best foods for your teeth, as they’re rich in calcium, a mineral that fortifies enamel.

Dark leafy greens like kale and spinach are also a great choice. Throw them in a salad, on a Neapolitan pizza, or add them to your next smoothie. These greens come packed with vitamins and minerals and are low in calories.

Snacking at work? Grab an apple and some almonds. Both are high in fiber, a natural saliva-stimulating detergent for the mouth.

Limit Soft Drinks

The pH level in a can of Coke is 2.5. In comparison, battery acid has a pH of 1.0, and water a pH of 7.0. When we slurp down soda, its acidity erodes enamel and leads to decay. So not only are soft drinks bad for your waistline, but they can also wreak havoc on your teeth as well.

Don’t Fall Behind on Dentist Visits

Forgot the last time you went to the dentist? Then it’s probably time. The American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist twice a year. The more you can prevent dental problems, the more money you’ll save on treatment costs, and the healthier your mouth will be.

(Tip: It’s helpful to schedule an appointment during the month of your birthday. That way, you’ll always remember the last time you went and can set up another visit six months after that.)

Change Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months

Three months is the time it takes for bacteria to grow on your toothbrush. That’s why dentists recommend swapping out brushes (or toothbrush heads for electric brushes) around the three to four-month mark. Frayed bristles are a good indication you might need a new brush.

Also, consider getting a new toothbrush if you have been sick or traveling (storing wet brushes encourages bacteria buildup).

Brush Twice a Day and Floss Once a Day

It’s convenient to think if you brush you can get away without flossing. But they’re not mutually exclusive; rather, they’re a complementary pair. Brushing helps eliminate plaque and food debris on the visible surfaces of teeth, while flossing cleans the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies between teeth and around the gumline.

6 Smile Resolutions for the New Year

But how do we smile more when sometimes it seems like there isn’t all that much to smile about?

Here are 6  additional easy tips to make sure that you not only share your own smile every day, but that you spark joy in others to smile right along with you.

1) Smile at a stranger 🙂

Chances are, they will smile back and both of your days will be a little brighter

2) Make someone else smile 🌼

Lend a helping hand, share a compliment, or tell a joke. A little can go a long way in making someones day!

3) Do something nice for yourself 🎁

Self-care is important, treat yourself! Its important to not forget about YOU when trying to smile more.

4) Reach out 💌

Contact someone you haven't spoken to in a while - a simple "Hi, I've been thinking about you" text is a great start. Life can get busy sometimes, but taking 5 minutes out from your day to reach out to someone whom you’ve lost touch with can make a huge impact.

5) Give thanks 🙏

Recognize at least one gift in your life every day and say "thank you". Thank your clothes for giving you warmth, your home for providing shelter, your family for being supportive, or even simply your couch for being a place you can always relax. There is much to be thankful for.

6) GLO bright ✨

Make sure those pearly whites are GLOing bright so your smile never has to hesitate to shine
