5 New Year Non-Diet Related Healthy Habits | GLO Science

Looking forward into a new year naturally fills us with optimism. It's a symbolic time to refresh and regroup - to make a list of good habits and healthy New Year's resolutions we want to start or continue. Whether you're hoping to achieve some long-term or a few short-term goals, now is the time to do so! At GLO Science, we've put together five healthy habits for the New Year that will help uncover the best you possible - both emotionally and physically!

#1: Learn Something New

Is there something you've always wanted to know more about or learn how to do? Maybe it's to learn how to play guitar or how to knit, crochet or decorate cakes. Perhaps you've always wanted to study a certain era in history - or, you have always been fascinated with astronomy and want to learn more about it. Now is the time to dive in!

Whether you look for an online class, seek out how-to online resources or purchase a book, your methods for learning new things are endless in 2022. Online classes are the norm today, and online courses are often quite inexpensive. Whether they're for fun or educational (or professional) credit, signing up for an online course is super-simple and can enrich your life in ways you never thought possible!

#2: Incorporate Mindfulness

It's easy to worry about things that are out of our control. Whether you're worried about the past or the future, set that aside for a moment and focus on the present. Whether you learn how to meditate this year or take a few minutes out of your day to slip on your headphones and seek out a guided meditation on YouTube, it's important to be present and breathe. This is truly a great health resolution and is an important habit for a healthy lifestyle.

Relax, breathe and take a moment to focus on something that brings you happiness. Set a timer for five minutes and practice a new breathing method, such as the 4-7-8 breathing method. Sit and close your eyes, then breathe through your nose to the count of four. Hold the breath while you count to seven, then exhale through your mouth to the count of eight. Breathing allows you to sleep better, controls emotional responses and lowers blood pressure. Make it a New Year's resolution to take five minutes (or more) out of your day to focus inward.

#3: Spend More Time Outdoors

Getting out into nature, breathing in fresh air and becoming more aware of your surroundings are important healthy habits to start this year. Many of us spent a lot of time inside the four walls of our offices or apartments this past year. Healthy resolutions also include getting outside, observing the animals, the buildings and the landscape around you. Even if you simply cannot get outside daily, make it a New Year's resolution to explore one new area a week. A simple internet search will open up your world: look for parks, lakes, gardens and other outdoor activities that you can explore with a friend, family member or partner. Exploring new outdoor areas improve your moods, improve concentration and help us heal in body and mind.

#4: Volunteer

Healthy habits for a healthy lifestyle go well beyond what we put in our mouths. Getting outside of ourselves and getting out into the community are beneficial to not only others, but to ourselves. A quick internet search for volunteer opportunities near you can offer a wealth of ways for you to get involved. Whether it's walking dogs at your local animal shelter, serving meals at a homeless shelter or offering a unique professional skill to a non-profit to benefit it some way, many businesses are desperate for people to volunteer their time and their services. Volunteering is also good for you and is a healthy living habit: it increases brain function, gives you a sense of purpose and provides you a with a self-esteem boost.

#5: Practice Good Oral Health

Good oral health habits go hand-in-hand with good daily health habits. Studies have shown that good oral health directly affects your overall health. Your teeth are oftentimes some of the first signs of infection, nutritional deficiencies and other diseases. Your mouth is also filled with bacteria that, when left unchecked, can cause cardiovascular disease, stroke and other health problems. Focusing on your teeth is a great step in habits for a healthy lifestyle.

Along with regular dental checkups, professional cleaning and regular brushing and flossing, it's also a great idea to incorporate teeth whitening into your regular routine - consider GLO Science whitening devices such as GLO Brilliant or GLO Lit. Our clinically proven, safe and effective GLO Science whitening gel was designed by a top practicing dentist and uses gentle warming heat and LED light to achieve results - to five (or more!) shades lighter after your first full treatment of five to seven days. Did you know that the hydrogen peroxide ingredient in our GLO Vials (our patented teeth whitening gel) can also help reduce germs in your mouth, which keeps your mouth healthy? Also, when you whiten your teeth, you pay more attention to oral hygiene and are more likely to take better care of your overall oral and dental health.

New Year's resolutions are a great way to assess our habits and improve ourselves. They don't have to be difficult or time-consuming. Just a little self-reflection and healthy daily habits can make a huge difference!
